Watertown, NY – January, 2017
The United Way of Northern NY selected WESTELCOM to implement a hosted voice platform for their growing Watertown office.    WESTELCOM, a long-time supporter of the United Way, has been providing fiber delivered voice and Internet to the agency for many years, so when CEO Robert Gorman found his office in need of a new system, they looked toward their communications provider to implement a reliable, flexible and efficient solution.  “We provisioned a next generation hosted system in the midst of the United Way’s major campaign, so we needed to act quickly and integrate without a hitch”, stated Account Manager Steve Wood.  United Way President & CEO Robert Gorman described their transition to Westelcom’s Hosted platform, a no brainer.     “Nonprofits have to take care of business, even when finances are tight,” said Gorman. “So for only a few bucks a month more, we have a slew of new options. We are serving customers better and my staff is happy. I wish I had done this sooner.”

“When we asked companies to volunteer staff time to work on a Habitat for Humanity house, Westelcom signed up immediately,” said Bob Gorman, CEO of the United Way of NNY. “They also support many other area charities. If any company wants to know how to be a good corporate citizen, Westelcom has the template.”

WESTELCOM proudly supported the United Way’s annual campaign with $8,000 in donations and increasing employee participation every year.   The company raffles paid time off to their employees who contribute to the effort.  United Way’s campaign is in their final push in hopes to close out the year with acceleration asking donors to Give, Volunteer & Advocate.

About United Way of Northern NY

Since 1921, the United Way of Northern New York has been supporting the valuable work of nonprofits in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties by encouraging citizens to give, volunteer and advocate.

Our most visible role is to raise money for our nonprofits by going into the workplace to ask employees to make a weekly contribution through payroll deduction.

But our role is broader. We work to ensure our nonprofits are transparent, accountable and sustainable so that donors can be assured their money is being well spent. We sponsor region-wide initiatives, such as developing discount prescription drug cards, and the 2-1-1 information and referral hot-line.

And each year we organize volunteer committees to review the work of our nonprofits to offer suggestions for improvement and to ensure they are not duplicating services.

Our partner agencies provide three basic services – prevention, intervention and crisis care. And because they constantly cross-refer clients, the United Way is dedicated to explaining to our community how all of our nonprofits are dependent on each other to be successful.

How does a local organization partner with United Way?

Any not-for-profit providing a useful, unduplicated service in the three-county region is eligible to apply for United Way funding. United Way dollars have helped start several of our nonprofits, including Jefferson Rehabilitation Center, Volunteer Transportation Center and the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.
